What if hundreds of Oklahomans were dying and no one said a word?
Like Angie, too many Oklahomans have lost a loved one due to prescription drug abuse — a serious problem in our state, previously unknown to most Oklahomans. That is, until The Oklahoman began to investigate. Through its Addicted Oklahoma series, The Oklahoman exposed out-of-control clinics, pharmacies, doctors and abusers, and a system that enabled exploitation.
“I think that we were slow to understand the devastating effects that addiction can have on our community,” Kris Steele, former Oklahoma House Speaker says. “After The Oklahoman’s coverage of prescription drug abuse, laws were changed to make our community safer. Without the education that The Oklahoman provided, that initiative may not have been accomplished.”
According to Angie, The Oklahoman has also served as a valuable resource for those dealing with addiction. “I didn’t have any idea what to do or where to turn, and the information The Oklahoman put out there gave me a place to start.”
